RICHARD ERLENDSON

Photographer

Richard Erlendson is a Calgary-based photojournalist and professor in the Department of Information Design in the Faculty of Communication Studies at Mount Royal University. He holds both a masters and doctorate from the University of Alberta.

About the photographer

Richard Erlendson’s first love is photography. He’s a photographer, and he loves to create beautiful, striking images. He’s also a prominent Canadian photography educator. And he’s a longtime photographer of the Calgary Stampede.

But what he loves most is taking on new photographic assignments. He is passionate about shooting weddings, family events, family photos, sports events, portraits, corporate events and all forms of editorial assignments for publication. He rises to the challenge of covering any event extra-ordinarily well, but also seeks to capture those moments that are special and that perspective no one else noticed.

So, yes, Richard is a Calgary-based independent photojournalist. But he’s also a professor in the Department of Information Design in the Faculty of Communication Studies at Mount Royal University. He holds both a masters and doctorate from the University of Alberta.

And what makes him live on the edge is accepting photo assignments – big or small. “Every photography project provides opportunity for remarkable images,” he says.

He studied photojournalism in the 1970s, and began his photography career as the chief photographer at the Daily Herald-Tribune in Grande Prairie, Alberta – a position he held through the 1980s.

His photographs are known for their ecological and natural themes, and his use of natural lighting and macro-cropping. As well, he utilizes creative lighting to capture warm, magical hues.

Richard’s photographic philosophy is captured by two words: mystery and abundance. “When I am photographing the world, I understand that I am revealing life’s unfolding mystery. I am interpreting the world by the images I create – whether they be aspects of nature or people. There is such incredible abundance when looking at the world through a camera: colour, texture, pattern, shape, movement, light, action, and emotion. There is so much beauty to record.”

Richard is an award-winning photographer and writer, and since 2014, an award-winning professor as well. (In 2014 received the Distinguished Faculty Award at MRU.) In 2005, Alberta’s centennial year, Richard’s life’s work was publically acknowledged when he was awarded the Centennial Medal – granted to Alberta’s significant citizens in recognition of the province’s 100th anniversary as a province. The award recognized his exemplary and award-winning work as a career professor and photojournalist.

He’s a founding and continuing member of the Alberta News Photographers’ Association (ANPA) – now subsumed by the News Photographers’ Association of Canada (NPAC). He is also a member of the National Press Photographers’ Association (NPPA).

Over the years he’s won countless monthly and yearly awards in various categories with the professional associations listed above as well as other awards with various organizations.

He’s also a member of the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) – a professional organization composed of photojournalists and wedding photographers from around the world. What sets its members apart in the industry is their candid, documentary approach – a distinctly artistic vision toward wedding photography.

He has published ten books of photography.

Follow him on Facebook where he posts photo essays and albums from his on-going photographic work.
